2018 Mark Island Race- Sailing Instructions

1                RULES

  • 1.1            The regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing.
  • 1.2            World Sailing Offshore Special Regulations Appendix B – Special Regulations for inshore races shall apply
  • 1.3            All boats in all classes shall carry a functioning VHF radio. All boats shall comply with Federal and State safety requirements.


  • 2.1            Notices will be placed on the SYC Racing Board.


  • 3.1            Any change to the Sailing Instructions will be posted before 1100 on the day of the race.

4                SIGNALS MADE ASHORE

  • 4.1            Signals made ashore will be made at the SYC clubhouse.

5                SCHEDULE

  • 5.1            There will be no skippers’ meeting.
  • 5.2            The time of the first warning is scheduled for 1300.  The first start will be at 1305. Subsequent races will be held as soon as practicable after the end of the previous race. 
  • 5.3            There will be one class using the Portsmouth yardstick handicap system.

6                COURSE and Marks

  • 6.1            The courses will be windward leeward courses. All marks will be orange drop marks and will be rounded to port.

7                Starting and FINISH LINE

  • 7.1            The start and finish line shall be between the orange flag on the signal boat and a nearby orange drop mark. All Divisions will start together.

8                PENALTY SYSTEM

  • 8.1            The Two-Turns penalty as defined in RRS 44.2 will apply to infringements of Part II, Right of Way Rules.

9                TIME LIMIT

  • 9.1            If no boats finish the race within 60 minutes the race shall be abandoned. Any boat not yet finished 30 minutes after the first boat has finished shall be scored DNF without a hearing. This changes rules 35, A4 and A5.

10              PROTESTS

  • 10.1         Protests shall be delivered to the race committee within 30 minutes after the signal boat docks. The protest time limit and a list of protests received will be posted on the notice board. Hearings will be held as soon as practicable after the race in a location specified on the notice board.

11              SCORING AND PRIZES

  • 11.1         3 races are scheduled for each race day. All scores will count. One race constitutes a series.
  • 11.2         Boats will be scored using the standard Portsmouth Yardstick scoring scheme.
  • 11.3         Boats will be scored in two divisions with the following division breaks:
  • Division 1: Portsmouth Yardstick Number less than or equal to 89
  • Division 2: Portsmouth Yardstick Number greater than 89
  • 11.4         First place prizes will be awarded in all divisions. Second place prices will be awarded in divisions with 3-5 boats, Third place prizes will be awarded in divisions with at least 6 boats.


  • 12.1         The race committee will monitor VHF channel 72 for emergency transmissions.  The race committee may also be using VHF channel 72 for working communications, and may employ an “open mike” policy.  Boats may monitor VHF channel 72, but are advised that any race committee communications are unofficial, and made either for race management purposes or as a courtesy to the competitors.

13              SAFETY

  • 13.1         All yachts are requested to check-in with the Race Committee before the start of the race by sailing past the RC signal boat on starboard tack and hailing their sailing number, and receiving confirmation from the Race Committee, or by calling on VHF channel 72.
  • 13.2         A yacht that retires must notify the RC as soon as possible.


  • 14.1         Competitors participate in the regatta entire at their own risk.  See RRS Rule 4, Decision to Race.  The organizing authority will not accept any liability for material damage or personal injury or death sustained in conjunction with or prior to, during, or after the regatta.

15              INSURANCE

  • 15.1         Each participating boat shall be insured with valid third-party liability insurance.
