The 'Round Southport Race is an annual reverse handicap pursuit race collaboratively sponsored by SYC and BHYC.


Southport wins the Trash Can in 2019!



The race course annually alternates between the start in Ebenecook

and finish in the vicinity of Tumbler Island and the reverse.

 

In 2019 the race began near the Ink Bottle buoy in Ebenecook Harbor and finished in the vicinity of Tumbler Island in Boothbay Harbor. 

Refreshments followed at the BHYC,

with the presentation of the honored Trash Can Award.

NOTICE OF RACE 

1 RULES

1.1 The regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing.

1.2 World Sailing Offshore Special Regulations Appendix B – Special Regulations for inshore races shall apply.

1.3 All yachts shall carry a functioning VHF radio. The Race Committee will make every attempt to hail competitors

verbally and on VHF channel 72. It is the responsibility of competitors to comply with instructions from the signal

boat.

1.4 All boats shall comply with Federal and State safety requirements.

2 ADVERTISING

2.1 Advertising shall be in accordance with World Sailing Regulation 20.

2.2 Boats may be required to display advertising chosen and supplied by the organizing authority.

3 ELIGIBILITY AND ENTRY

3.1 The race is open to monohull yachts with valid PHRF New England certificates for 2019. To get a rating certificate go to www.gmora.org.

3.2 There will be a racing (spinnaker) division and a cruising division.

Because this is a “Pursuit” Race, all registrations should be complete no later than 2000 on 6 July 2019.

4 FEES

4.1 There is no fee to participate in this race. Many thanks to all the volunteers who make this event happen each year.

5 SCHEDULE

5.1 The race will be held on Sunday, July 7, 2019.

5.2 No Skippers’ Meeting will be held.

5.3 The first warning is scheduled for 1100. The first start will be at 1105.

5.4 Festivities and awards will be held at BHYC immediately after the race.

6 MEASUREMENTS

6.1 Boats without valid 2019 PHRF‐NE handicap certificate will be handicapped by the RC based on PHRF‐NE handicaps of similar boats. Determinations by the Race Committee regarding handicapping in the event that PHRF‐NE certificates are not present shall be final and not subject to redress.

7 SAILING INSTRUCTIONS

7.1 The Sailing Instructions will be available ONLINE on or before 0900 July 5, 2019. The starting sequence will be

available online after 0900 on race day, printed copies may be made available at the committee boat. The starting

sequence will be announced on channel 72 prior to first signal.

8 VENUE

8.1 The racing will take place in the waters of Boothbay Harbor and the Sheepscot River to the East and West

respectively of Southport Island.

9 COURSE

9.1 The race will be around Southport Island from West to East course.

9.2 The course will be 9.55 nm and is further specified in the Sailing Instructions.

9.3 The Start Line shall be in Ebenecook Harbor on a line due west of the “Ink Bottle” beacon on Cameron Point and the middle of Boston Island.

9.4 The Finish Line shall be due west of the Tumbler Island flasher (R8) in Boothbay Harbor approximately ½ the

distance between the flasher and the shoreline due west on Juniper Point (or just west of letters ‘Fl’ on the chart).

10 PENALTY SYSTEM

10.1 The Two‐Turns penalty as defined in RRS 44.1 will apply to infringements of Part II, Right of Way Rules.

10.2 For the Cruising Division RRS Rule 44.1 is changed so that the Two‐Turns Penalty is replaced by the One‐Turn Penalty.

11 SCORING

11.1 There will be one race. Racing will be in the reverse handicap, pursuit race format.

11.2 One race shall constitute a series.

11.3 Starting times will be calculated using the standard PHRF Time on Distance formula. Results are based on finishing

order unless the course is shortened, in which case times will be recalculated.

11.4 The low point scoring system, RRS Rule A4, shall be used.

11.5 Ties will be broken in strict accordance with RRS Rule A8.

12 PRIZES AND TROPHIES

12.1 The “Trash Can” Trophy will be awarded to either Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club or Southport Yacht Club to be held until the next ‘Round Southport Race. The winning Yacht Club shall be determined by taking the finishing score of the first three finishing yachts from each Club, with the lowest combined score being the winner of the prize. In order to be scored for a club, the skipper and/or owner of the boat must be a registered member of that club. A skipper/owner who is a member of both clubs shall designate which club the boat will represent PRIOR to the race. Boats not a member of either club shall not be counted for purposes of awarding the Trash Can trophy.

12.2 Individual prizes will be presented to the top 3 finishers in each class at BHYC following the race.

12.3 Boats with a valid rating certificate issued by PHRF‐New England that are registered as members of the Gulf of

Maine Ocean Racing Association (GMORA), and boats that are members of J/80 Fleet 14, will be scored as part of

the GMORA Boothbay Region and overall series. (To join GMORA and get a rating certificate go to www.gmora.org.)

13 DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY

13.1 Competitors participate in the regatta entire at their own risk. See RRS Rule 4, Decision to Race. The organizing authority will not accept any liability for material damage or personal injury or death sustained in conjunction with or prior to, during, or after the regatta.

14 INSURANCE

14.1 Each participating boat shall be insured with valid third‐party liability insurance.

SAILING INSTRUCTIONS

2 NOTICES TO COMPETITORS 2.1 Notices will be placed online on the race website (click the “more information” link in the upper right).

3 CHANGES TO SAILING INSTRUCTIONS 3.1 Any change to the Sailing Instructions will be posted before 0900 on the day of the race, except that any change to the schedule of the races will be posted by 2000 on the day before it will take effect.

4 SIGNALS MADE ASHORE 4.1 Signals will not be made ashore for this race.

5 SCHEDULE 5.1 There will be no skippers’ meeting.

5.2 There will be one race.

5.3 The time of the first warning is scheduled for 1100. The first start will be at 1105.

5.4 The starting sequence will be posted online and will be available at the committee boat.

5.5 The R/C will announce the starting time for the next yacht(s) in the sequence on VHF Channel 72. Failure of a yacht to hear the announcement will not be grounds for protest.

5.6 Festivities and awards will be held at BHYC immediately following the race.

6 COURSE AND TIDES 6.1 The race will be around Southport Island from West to East with a length of 9.55nm. Yachts will rendezvous in Ebenecook Harbor in the area of the “Ink Bottle.”

6.2 The course will not be shortened or changed. The race may be abandoned for reasons of safety, inclement weather, and rough seas. Code flag "N" with 3 sounds will indicate that racing has been abandoned.

6.3 TIDE INFORMATION FOR BOOTHBAY HARBOR

Sunday, July 7, 2019:

Low: 9:17 a.m.

High: 3:40 p.m.

7 MARKS OF THE COURSE 7.1 Yachts will keep Cat Ledges R “4CL” Gong and Cuckolds G Bell “1C” to PORT.

8 AREAS THAT ARE OBSTRUCTIONS 8.1 Yachts shall not sail on the east side of the Cat Ledges or between Southport and Lower Mark Island.

9 STARTING LINE 9.1 The starting line will be in Ebenecook Harbor on a line due west of the “Ink Bottle” beacon on Cameron Point and the middle of Boston Island and shall be between the orange flag on the signal boat and a nearby drop mark. A limiting mark may be streamed from the signal boat. Boats striking this limiting mark or sailing between the mark and the signal boat will be considered in violation of RRS 31

9.2 Boats not within five minutes of their scheduled start shall avoid the starting area.

9.3 For postponements before any starting signal, the duration of the postponement will be added to each start time in the starting sequence. Postponements will be in increments of 10 minutes to simplify determining start times.

10 FINISH LINE 10.1 The finish line shall be between Tumbler buoy (R”8” FL R 4s) and McKown Point and shall be between an orange flag on the signal boat and a nearby drop mark.

11 PENALTY SYSTEM 11.1 The Two-Turns penalty as defined in RRS 44.2 will apply to infringements of Part II, Right of Way Rules.

12 TIME LIMIT 12.1 If no boats finish the race by 1600 the race shall be abandoned. Any boat not yet finished 90 minutes after the first boat in her class has finished shall be scored DNF without a hearing. This changes rules 35, A4 and A5.

13 PROTESTS 13.1 Protests shall be delivered to the race committee within 30 minutes after the signal boat docks. The protest time limit and a list of protests received will be posted on the notice board. Hearings will be held as soon as practicable after the race in a location specified on the notice board.

14 SCORING AND PRIZES 14.1 The “Trash Can” Trophy will be awarded to the winning Yacht Club to be held until the next Round Southport Race.

14.2 The winning Yacht Club shall be determined by taking the finishing score of the first three finishing yachts from each Club (regardless of class), with the lowest combined score being the winner of the prize.

15 RADIO COMMUNICATION 15.1 The race committee will monitor VHF channel 72 for emergency transmissions. The race committee may also be using VHF channel 72 for working communications and may employ an “open mike” policy. Boats may monitor VHF channel 72, but are advised that any race committee communications are unofficial, and made either for race management purposes or as a courtesy to the competitors.

16 SAFETY 16.1 All yachts are requested to check-in with the Race Committee before the start of the race by sailing past the RC signal boat on starboard tack and hailing their sailing number, and receiving confirmation from the Race Committee, or by calling on VHF channel 72.

16.2 A yacht that retires must notify the RC as soon as possible.
